Synthesis of History and Modernity: DesignInc’s Burwood Council Community Hub, Library, and Workplace

In the design world, where innovation meets utility and historical grandeur aligns with the vibrance of the present, DesignInc has once again proven its prowess with the superb transformation of the Burwood Council Community Hub, Library, and Workplace in Sydney, Australia.

DesignInc, celebrated for its integrated approach to sustainable architecture, landscape, and interior designs, takes pride in its aptitude to foster singular ideas into multiple benefit-yielding solutions. Known for their ingenious projects, they have once again proven their worth with their work in Sydney, where they reimagined a range of public facilities to better accommodate the needs of the council team and the community.

Burwood, recognised as a significant centre by the NSW Government, is slated for considerable growth over the next 25 years, leveraging the area’s robust local economy and excellent transport infrastructure. The Burwood Council precinct site, with a history dating back to 1887, has a rich, layered narrative. It hosts the original heritage-listed council building, refurbished as a ‘one-stop-shop,’ customer service centre, and the Mayor’s office.

DesignInc, adapting to the rise of digital technologies and networked information, has transformed the space into a vibrant and modern environment. Static desks and offices have been replaced with agile working opportunities, digitally enabled environments, and seamless indoor/outdoor transitions. The facilities foster a sense of community, encouraging connection and collaboration.

Elevating the aesthetic value of this space is the inclusion of the LEN’s Bauhaus collection, a prominent part of Australian furniture design, which comprises the Bauhaus Grid Lounge and the Bauhaus Grid Ottoman. Designed by Helen Kontouris, this collection is defined by its compact, gently curved, soft quilted form, drawing inspiration from the core geometric shapes of Bauhaus – squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. There are two colour variations of the Bauhaus collection within the space. One is in red and orange, while the other combines two shades of blue. Both pieces are strategically placed within the space alongside other interior accents.

The Bauhaus Grid Lounge is a striking amalgamation of different shapes, creating a visually appealing and distinctive seating arrangement. The varied lounge formations infuse life into interior spaces, making it a favourite among various environments – from workspaces to residences, public seating, and education environments. Not only do they enhance the functionality of the space, but they also contribute to its visual appeal, reinforcing the strength and adaptability of Australian furniture design.

Complementing the Bauhaus Grid Lounge is the Bauhaus Grid Ottoman. Like its counterpart, the Ottoman presents an array of quilted forms and seating configurations. The interchangeability of these forms makes the Ottoman a flexible and inviting piece of Australian furniture design, adding a touch of luxury to various interior environments.

As part of the Bauhaus collection, the Grid Lounge and the Ottoman are defined by their compact, gently curved, soft quilted forms combined with a sophisticated palette of seating configurations, encouraging interchangeable formations. The modular design of these pieces, which is a testament to the innovation and quality of Australian furniture design, makes them perfect for residences or workspaces. Their visually bold and soft quilted forms are a signature of the luxury they offer.

DesignInc’s human-centred design solution has transformed the Burwood Council Community Hub into a series of flexible spaces. Integrating natural light, a vast array of plants, and a sophisticated approach to colour create a seamless experience for the community and the council staff across the site. The various spaces โ€“ the administrative, library and customer service facilities and outdoor areas, all weave into one unique tapestry of art and functionality.

Despite numerous challenges, including the global pandemic, DesignInc delivered this outstanding project on time and within budget. This design marvel showcases their commitment to ensuring Burwood remains an exciting and vibrant place to live, work, and visit. The Burwood Council Community Hub is a masterpiece reflecting a blend of art, luxury, and utility โ€“ a testament to the magic Australian furniture design can bring into a space.
